I've started teaching a class on acrylics but they have only used poster paint in the paste. Frankly I don't remember using tempera paints except grade school.
I cut an 18-hole egg carton in half and used the bottom wells covered with a wet piece of paper towel. This I fit nicely into disposable plastic squares with covers. I filled each hole with a few colors almost half-way and put their names on the plastic boxes. Each week we give the paint a spray of water. They have not dried but once opened the children complain of a moldy smell. I just smell paint myself? I don't see mold but I did read somewhere if I add a small amount of bleach to the water it will prevent mold. For the past 3-4 weeks this has worked for us but I am concerned that I do not smell what the children are smelling. Any advice?

Recently I did my first painting on prepared masonite. I was amazed at the difference this surface makes. The paints seem to flow on and blend readily. I am looking forward to doing more painting on this surface. Try it and let me know what you think.

I'm sorry I lost your attachment Myartic, It happened when I changed ISP's 10-1-6

Hi Don,

Can you tell me an acrylic pigment that would best represent cyan of your Color Wheel?

In my area, I can find Finity, Golden, Liquitex, Tri-art, and Pebeo brands readily.

I myself like the handling of Finity and Tri-Art slightly better than the others

Thanks,

behrouz

Dear Don,
Despite living in a humid climate here in FL as you do there, it has been a surpise to me when some acrylic paintings I had laying on top of each other stuck with some of the paint coming off! It seems that the acrylic medium wasn't dry even when I thought it was. How long should I expect it to take for drying do you think? Would using a hair dryer after a few days help assure that stickiness won't happen? Setting them out in the sun? One also stuck to a frame where it touched! These had been in the a/c studio area for at least 10+ days. I had no idea from feeling the surface that it wasn't completely dry.
I do admit that I tend to use gel or medium in most of the work. I like the texture, but I was sure they were dry.
Very annoying. Suggestions? Thanks, Brownie
Q&A About Atelier Interactive Artists’ Acrylics

There is a new acrylic on the market that stays open longer and can be re-wet the next day. I haven't tried it yet because I have never had a problem with acrylics as they are. They have a good FAQ page.

Q Why is Interactive different to all other acrylics?

A. Conventional acrylics have always dried too quickly, with no transition stage between wet and dry so that most painting are wet paint applied over dry. Atelier Interactive however, does not form a skin during the drying process so there is a ‘window of opportunity’ at the transition stage between wet and dry allowing you to rework the paint.
Q. How fast does Interactive dry?

A Interactive dries at the same rate as any conventional acrylic but dries differently. This difference allows you to rehydrate the paint when you want to continue working wet–in–wet.

Plus a lot more.
http://www.chromaonlinenew.com/index.php/chroma/products/atelier_interactive/interactive_faq

They also have some new painting mediums.
http://www.chromaonlinenew.com/index.php/chroma/products/atelier_interactive/mediums
Is there a downside to leaving it as is? thanks, Larry

Hi larry, you can leave it as is, but a clear coating of water based polyurethane as a final coat will not yellow and will bring out the richness of dull areas and colors and afford extra protection. I never go without it. Plus it's not sticky like what the others are selling. they are dry to the touch but will stick togather if stacked.
Don

**

Larry Dobbs wrote:

> Don - I saw this one on Blicks?
>
>
>
> Jo Sonja's Water Based Polyurethane Varnish provides a protective finishing coat of exceptional toughness and flexibility, a coating that resists chemicals, heat, and abrasion. Cleans up with water. Can be used for exterior use by applying at least 6 coats.
>
> Clear and non-yellowing. 8 oz (237 ml) bottle.
>
**

Don: I'm an innovator, every manufacture comes to my site. This is the latest, transparent yellow was the first. Jo Sonja's can copy and sell it, but, like I said, go to your hardware store and get it a lot cheaper The idea is to get the best for our living artists. In history it took 200 years after a two generation war to get the artists up to High Art Standards. We have been at war since 1890, but we have the internet now so information can get passed on a lot faster. Charging for the information would slow the process down, I think. That's why I give it away free.
Don
Hi All,

I've been using Golden's Open Acrylics since they came out last Summer (2008.) Find them to be wonderful! The tinting strength is superb, the dry time perfect, and "open" long enough to minimize the need for retarder. They move like a combo of regular acrylics and fine oils, but nothing matches the feel of oil.

Anyway, having spent years and years using this media, I never used mediums unless absolutely necessary and only retarder mixed with water as a spray to keep the paint flowing. That is, unless I want the piece to dry before moving on.

I use a limited palette most of the time anyway and no black...just don't need it.

Wondering your thoughts on this new paint. For me, the jury is still out on longevity, and more additives in the paint. Nevertheless, it seems very promising to me.

All the Best,
Diane

BTY: If used thickly enough, these paints have a beautiful lustre rather than a matte/shiny look. I did not varnish one piece since it was wonderful on it's own. However, since I still mostly use standard acrylics, use varnish on most of those.

I would like tips on dealing with acrylic paints' color shift as they dry.
Esepecially the issue of having to mix colors to match the already dried color on the canvas to rework some areas or to go back on a painting later. If the new mix of color- when it is wet- looks like the exact same color on the canvas you are matching to , will dry darker upon drying, what do you do about it ?

I think a thread on this issue is going to be a great help for acrylicists.
Please jump in everybvody and share your thoughts and input.

Rency
