Here is the history of egg tempera, and my painting on panel in mastic egg tempera. Had I been working on paper I would have used egg and alum only. Than it would be called distempera.
This page explains how to do it. It's very time consuming as thin layers is what it's all about. I only used 3 colors plus white.
