Title: LDJ Pastel Paintings - Azaleas Post by L_Diane_Johnson on Mar 13th, 2009 at 3:58pm
Hi All,
This is part of a collection of pieces painted in Callaway Garden, Georgia. If you know about this place, it is known for it's massive acres of mature azaleas. Wanted to go there for over 20 years and finally got there. Here are just a few from the collection of that excursion: Solitude | 10x10 in. | Soft Pastel on Wallis Professional Morning Festival | 10x10 in. | Soft Pastel on Wallis Professional Sun's Grace | 10x10 in. | Soft Pastel on Wallis Professional |

They really look good Diane, crisp, great color, perfect composition, outstanding oppositions. Did you spray them? How long did you stay at the Callaway Gardens?

Hi Don,
Thanks for the compliments. No spray...I only spray if I need to add another layer (and even then very lightly sprayed to add tooth back in). Never spray the final pieces...always frame under glass (you know this, I am just answering your q for others to benefit from.) I was there for nearly two weeks. Stayed with a friend and gave a workshop too. The great gardeners who I ran into while there even said it was the best season they had seen in many a year...that thrilled me to death. Thanks for the composition uptick...that means so much to me. Used to be such a tight painter. But wanted to loosen up on this series to retain movement in the paintings. At least tried :) Al the Best, D. |

I just did three recent pastels on masonite board and painted the board with pastel gesso. The board won't wrinkle and I sprayed them with a milk casein. They are as tough as an acrylic painting now.
