Title: Question about pastels
Post by cherlin on Jan 11th, 2006 at 12:06am
I'm learning water coloring but as I look at all the multimedia paintings I keep seeing more and more mention about pastels. Just exactly how do you use them and what are they?  Always thought they were colored chalk but I see references to using them in lieu of oil paintings or water coloring and I get confused. Is there a web site I can read and learn or can you tell me?

Pastels are great, chalk and pigment.
Oil pastels are closer to crayons, both have wax in them and dissolve in turpentine.
Water based sticks of color can be water blended.
Dry pastels over w/c is a nice mixed media.
Oil pastels under or over a oil painting work.
