Hi Ms. Rilles,
Yellow lightens orange, orange lightens red and magenta will darken red, green darkens magenta, magenta darkens green, cyan darkens red. The red,yellow and blue color wheel will only make browns when you mix its complements. That's a nice rainbow and the white area in the middle of the fresco is nice too. 
8x8, very colorful, the ancients would have envied you.
