Lavender Flowers Remove Yellow from Flax Oil

Real Color Wheel for Artists on Location, this painting used this color wheel.

Botanical Name: Lavender plant goes by the scientific name, Lavendula spp.
Starting with the verity in our garden here in Makawao.
4:35 7-4-8
Photo of only fresh blue flowering lavender. I put them into cleaned and refined sun dried flax oil. In the beginning they all are floating.
5:06, I'm trying to push them down, most of them stay on top.
5;34 That didn't work, I turned the jar upside down.
12:40 It might be clearing but I can't tell in this artificial light.

7-5-8, 8:20 AM
I couldn't really tell, so I picked more flowers. I added 170 more. I didn't count the first batch but I would guess about 50.
These are single, flowering only buds, just like yesterday.

Day two

3:50
It's now 50% clearer, I thought it was clearer then it is. The flowers are still floating, tomorrow I'll strain it floating flowers or not. It's been 7 hours, the total quantity of flowers in the oil is about 40%, 5% have fallen to the bottom.

7-6-8
It was a sucess, the oil is much clearer.
Day three

Describing this Lavendula plant, aroma 4-5, long square stem 12-15", sparse flowering green heads one in the center of the stem, round tipped leaves, unlike any other lavender plant there is a small leaf with each pod, much like the Sweet only with a full lavender hue.
The longest head is 4" long, in the oil 2:53 PM.

Today is 7/7/08. It is now 11:22 AM.
I'm going up to the largest lavender farm in Hawaii.
Alii Kula Lavender, 1100 Waipoli Road, Kula, Maui, Hawaii, 96790

web address www.aklmaui.com
Say hi to Mr. Alii, he gave me all these samples to help in my testing, I appreciate that.

My Garden lavender is Grosso, similar leaves, square stems and one bud away from the head.
From this plant I turned yellow flax (linseed) oil clear.
Velasquez, 1599-1660 was thought to use the lavender plant in his oil.

Varieties from the Kula Lavender Farm. This year start month was June.

Here are the lavender flowers I gathered,
next will be the lavender oil tests to see which variety works best.

The flower heads make a nice tea. Aroma values, aroma 1 = weak, aroma 5 = strong.
I'm using the finest Danish Linseed oil from Kremer, unwashed.

Spanish 1 - First were the plants under the windmill, I didn't get their name yet - aroma 0-1 sharp non-lavender smell, big pink flowers sprout from the top of the bulbous bud bundle head - small red-purple flowers close on head, round stem short 3-6" narrow pointed leaves, largest bud head bundles.
Because these were planted in such a special place and I have one empty jar left I'm going to give this variety a chance to clear my oil. Six 3/4 inch heads, full color and flowering, in the oil 3:56 PM, 7-8-8.

English 1 - aroma 4, medium 8-12" square stem, large very full and bright warm lavender heads, the highest color chroma lavender flower head 1/2" diameter.
Four heads into the oil, 2:50 PM, 7-8-8.

English lavender plant photos

English 2 White Lavender, Bono Vista - aroma 2-3, square stem no stem length, light green small heads, white flowers growing from the top of the head like the Spanish bulb.
Nine clipped flower buds and holders and a little less oil, the bud heads are only 1/2" small, 1:18 PM, 7-8-8.

White lavender plant photo

Lavendula angustifolia - English 3, Pink Hidcote Anjustifolia - aroma 3-4, deep purple blooms, small plant, Sparse flowering heads, medium square stem length 8", highest oil content.
I cut off all the flowers and flower holders off the sparse heads to put in the oil, 1:25 PM.

Sweet - aroma 3-4, long stem 14-16", slight green in the lavender color giving a slight brownish cast to the flowers and stem, sparse flowers next to the full English heads, a small leaf accompanies each pod.
Four 1 to 2" heads in the oil, 2:38 PM.

Sweet lavender plant photo

Super - aroma 5 sweet, long flowering head 2-3", The only variety I could smell the mint family relationship in, deep purple with a touch of green heads, leaves similar to my garden's variety. I expect this variety to do well in oil clearing.
Putting my money where my mouth is I added 25% more oil. This variety has the biggest, fullest bud head, four inches long and up to 3/4" wide. Four buds in the oil 3:11 PM.

Super lavender plant photo

Grosso - aroma 4-5, long square stem, color not as deep as Super, it's the greatest lavender color out there.
I'm covering my bases and added 25% more oil here also. This may be the greatest lavender plant of all.
Four 2.5 to 3.0 heads, I took extra care and cut away all the stem. In the oil 3:38 PM

Goodwin Creek - aroma 2-3, medium length square stem, light tipped fuzzy leaves with up to three symmetrical bumps on them, brownish purple heads and stem, this is because the purple is mixing with the blue-green to yellow-green, the splatter micro dots are in the leaves also.
Three 3" heads cut in half in the oil 1:40AM.
