All Brush Series and Styles, Oil, Acrylic and Water Color Brushes

I have the same type of brushes for oil, water and acrylic paintings. The series are different.
Each style has a Extra Long, Long, Medium and Short hair series in that style.
Synthetic brushes are only good for the first few times that you use them, get natural sable brushes or natural hog bristle.

Comparative Hair Lengths of Brushes

These examples of length are basic for all series of all brushes.

Extra Long hog hair flat filbert, try this series an you will use them forever.
Extra Long hog hair flat filbert,
Extra Long hog hair flat filbert,
Long (just called Flat) hog hair flat filbert,
Short (called Bright) hog hair flat filbert,
#20 normal medium length hair, round sable
#12 Extra Long length hair, round sable, another "one step above" series.

Round Ferrule, Flat End

From #1 to #5 should be Short sable for great detail. Extra long hair would be for extra long lines. The #5 is my favorite brush of this style, and the #1 for signing and #3 for small work.

Example: A #0 brush stroking a  barbed wire would be either 1 1/4, 1 1/2, or 3 times longer than the Shortie which gives a more pencil like control. The Rigger and Liner series have the longer length for a  longer stroke.

round ferrule, pointed hair, sable
Round Ferrule, Pointed End

The Classic water color brush has the fullest belly. The Script brush has the longest hair,  up to twice the length of the normal Classic hair and with much less belly.  It's great for my palm fronds here in Hawaii.

This brush is handy in all the sable hair series and in the filbert extra long hog hair series.

flat flat sable
The bottom brush is my favorite squashed round ferrule (used) watercolor brush #8.
Flat Ferrule, Flat End

The longest series of this style brush are for Lettering, Longs have the medium length hair.  Oil paint can be applied thick with the shorter haired Bright style.  The acrylic artist will appreciate the longer haired series. This style is great in the glazing squirrel hair series in any media, the sables are great in watercolor and acrylics.

oil bristle
Bristle, Hog Hair

Round and flat ferrule, pointed, flat and filbert hair ends. Their styles are Bright, Longs and Extra Longs.

Here the larger sized brights are the workhorses in oil painting, the long's don't give as much control but lay down more paint.

Hog hair has no use in water mediums, except fresco.

fan sable and bristle
Fan Brush

The fan brush comes in bristle hog hair, sable and black sable badger hair. This style of brush can be used for patterns like grass,  water and  makes sweeping strokes for blending oils.

Stippling Brush

The Round Ferrule Flat End Bristle Stipple blending brush can be used both for oils and pastels but not watercolors or acrylics.

Oil Painting Tools

A mechanical thin lead pencil.
1" and 1.5" USA foam brushes.
A chalk holder.
Several palette knives.
A brushing feather for chalk dusting.
A straight edge and ruler.

Water Color Set for on location.

W/C  Brushes

Most of my water color brushes, like all my brushes are sable hair. I do have a few synthetic brushes for the larger sizes. They don't last as long but I don't use them as much.

Winsor Newton Rounds and Raphael Flat Extra Long are the two most common brands I have. My 5" elephant ear sponge is not shown. I use it first than the large round ferrule synthetic white sable.

Round ferule, flat end, series #163, #4 Langnickel sable.
Round ferrule, Series #7, Winsor Newton, pointed w/c, #2 sable.
Round ferrule, flat end, Series 167, Langnickel, #8, sable.
Round ferrule, flat end, #1, series #3045, Langnickel, combo.

6-13-06, I found a chisel brush supplier, Lettering Brushes Series 8B, 1-800-322-5254, brushes@att.net
KALISH FINEST BRUSHES, make the finest brushes in the world.
On 6-13-06 I got an email from a girl reading how I was searching the world to replace my Langnickle "Shorty" Series brushes. The only ones left were in my working collection. She sent me to Kalish Finest Brushes. Wow, I was impressed and ordered their Kolinsy Series 8A Lettering Brushes. I agree, they are the finest in the world. I asked him to make a series that were shorter, stiffer and fuller, using my existing brushes as samples, he had them made.

On 7-3-06 Harry Kalish called me saying he had and was sending me my brushes. This brush series is now called Series 8B SHORT CHISEL. I can't wait to test them.

11-22-6, Kalish Kolinski Sable Chisel Brushes. The Series 8B is complete, #1 to #8. They are perfect! I tested them all today and am proud and very happy.

Kalish Finest Brushes: Kolinsky Short Chisel
Dear Don,
Thank you for your call!
I know just the brush you're referring to -- you're famous around here. :) It's the Kolinsky 8B (short chisel). Harry is very proud to have worked with you on this brush. It's available on our website here:
http://www.kalishfinestbrushes.biz/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=KFB&Category_Code=00C
However, I'd be happy to help you directly. I would have tried calling you directly, but for the time difference!
Please let me know how I can help you. :) ~Nancy Friedman

5-12-14, Don: Answer to Nancy.
Thanks for the link to the short chisel Nancy, I'll add it to his pages. It's true, we needed a water color chisel brush. We also need a stiffer acrylic/oil chisel brush. Since Langnickle died the company stopped making my favorite round ferrule flat end hair brush. They used to make them in many different series, now no one makes them in any series.

This type of mechanical pencil is much better than a pencil that must be sharpened.  That is a kneaded eraser wrapped on a small washer on a string, the only type of eraser to use.

Acrylic Brushes for on location.

This is the first of two sections of acrylic brushes.

Acrylic brushes don't require as sharp a point as watercolor brushes because..
W/C needs a fine point to align edges of paint precisely and an overlap is much more noticeable and more objectionable because of it's transparency

This is the brush I grab to start laying in a painting. It's a squashed used up watercolor brush made to work like a filbert. Being a great watercolor brush it had great springy hair.
Squashed w/c #8, squashed to a filbert.

Four squirrel mops, they make large loose areas like skies or thin glazes. They are also great for buon fresco.
Three synthetic flat ferrule, filbert end, brushes.
The top brush is synthetic, a flat,  not bright. Excellent for laying in that first % coat of paint.
The second two are round ferrule pointed end extra long sables. The best! I can paint a whole painting with #12 Isabey.

GREAT NEWS, 6-29-2006, Kalish Finest Brushes.
QUESTIONS / ORDERING, 1 201 444-8035
Thank you Harry,
Harry Kalish made a new series of brushes for me called,
Series 8B SHORT CHISEL.
I highly recommend them for all water media.
I tried The #5 tonight with washes on dry lime cement 11-1-06.
They made a perfect wash when fully loaded, and as the media flowed out it went to a controlled point equal to a #1 stroke that was very dependable. This brush matches all the best qualities of the Langnickel "Fabulous 5" and "Sortie" Series of Old. The perfect brush is here again, long live the king.

11-22-6, Kalish Kolinski Sable Chisel Brushes. The Series 8B is complete, #1 to #8. They are perfect! I tested them all today and am proud and very happy.

http://www.kalishfinestbrushes.biz, Harry's site is gone now.

This set of round ferrule, pointed end, extra long sable riggers make the even thin and thick lines like no others.
These round ferrule, flat/chisel end sables make a long even width stroke and the small sharp corners are useful.

I found a supplier I was looking for. Lettering Brushes Series 8A, 1-973-887-1229. These chisel lettering brushes have some meat to them.
Harry Kalish (85 years old, 2006), really knew his stuff.

The fan brushes a great for blending wet areas and painting a textured stroke.

The rest of the brushes I keep in my studio boxes.
