Naples Yellow is made of antimony lead, the highter it is fired the darker it gets and the more expensive it is. This one's expensive. There were about six shades of Naples Yellow that were popular, from a greenish tint to this redish tint. Naples Yellow is and was a basic flesh tone.
Because it was so expensive Lead-Tin Yellow was a replacement during hard times, as when Rembrandt was alive. Today it is usually just a composition color and not nearly as opaque. If you're worth it get the real thing. |
