Maui Artist and Giclee Printer
Donald A. Jusko using the Real Color Wheel

What is a Giclée?

A Giclée (pronounced "zhee-clay) is a reproduction in which a digital file of this original painting was printed by a special ink jet printer that sprays pigments directly on the canvas. (The word Giclée literally means "to spray" in French.) These prints match the original piece of art because the plotter uses the same pigments used on the painting.

The Giclée production process reflects the long-standing European tradition of rendering one image at a time. The first step in creating a museum quality edition involves capturing the image using state-of-the-art, high resolution, digital scanning equipment. Either an original or a transparency can be scanned, and a sophisticated color management system allows him to utilize an extremely broad color palette.

While the process has a digital aspect, the skill of the craftsmen who define and proof the color is of utmost importance. Proofing a scan is an essential part of the process in creating an exquisite Giclée reproduction. Don Is the master of both the painting and printing. "Having fun is what it's all about."

The essence of a scanned image cannot be properly evaluated until it is printed on a medium of either canvas or paper. This reproduction is printed on premium canvas or watercolor paper of superior quality.

The plotter produces an apparent resolution of 1800 dots per inch, while spraying over 1 million droplets per second onto the chosen substrate. There are no screens used in this method of reproduction; therefore there is a smoother look to the final print. The precision of the printing, along with the depth of color range, captures the subtleties and nuances of the original image, whether it was created from watercolors, oils, or acrylic.

At every stage of the Giclée production process, the most exacting standards possible are employed. This assures that the reproduction is of the highest quality nearly indistinguishable from the original painting.

How permanent is the image? Since only the finest archival pigment inks are used and printed on premium canvas or watercolor paper, they are guaranteed not to fade yellow or shift colors for 200 years or more. In addition, all of the canvas graphics are 100% waterproof.

Can I order special sizes? Your order can be produced in sizes up to 50 inches for the narrow dimension. The standard sizes that this image can be made are 7.5x5.5, 10x8, 11x7.5, 15x11, 16x12, 22x15, 30x22 or 40x30. Whether you want a smaller or larger print size, you can calculate the price by multiplying the length (x) width (x) $.95. This will give you the dollar value of your proposed-sized print.

Order this and other Giclees painted and printed by Don Jusko online. Until I make this page with an ordering cart you will have to email the size and name of the giclee you want.

#09 Hana Ivy Tree, Hana, Maui, Hawaii

It's color or contrast that inspire me to paint a scene, this view just stopped me as I was driving around the back side of the island. I painted only watercolor for the first 10 years on Maui. This one is classic, it looks exactly the same while holding it up to the sun and viewing the back.

#10 Brig Carthaginian, Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii

This replica of an 1800 Whaling ship graced the Lahaina harbor until the Lahaina Action Committee removed it in 2006. They had it sunk in shallow waters within reach of divers. This water color painting took two weeks on location and was finished one week before it was dismantled. It was removed to make room for the tourist shuttle boats that were to come from the ocean liners. That year Maui was removed from their anchor ports. We lost a great ship for nothing.
