"En Plein Air is Painting on Location"
Kaupo Store 1978
15x22, Acrylic on panel
This painting hangs in the store today, stop by if your in the neighborhood. There's no place else to go for 20 miles in either direction. That boy in the painting is waiting for the store to open, he's the first one down the mountain of his group that spent the night in the creator. That's the Kaupo Gap in the mountains behind the store. This is an old store, built in 1925. Linda and Mani have been running it for the last 20 years that I know of. I think that's how long ago I painted this painting, it seems like only last week. The store hasn't changed a bit, neither has the painting, acrylics never turn yellow, 1998.
2014, I got here in 1976, 38 years ago. That means the painting is 36 years old and it's still as bright as the day I finished it. I've been using water based polyurethane from the hardware store as the final gloss finish on all my acrylic painting. It never sticks two paintings together when they're stacked or packed.
The store has changed since this painting was done, railing on the porch, new roof painted green, no sign on the roof or under the windows, new outside paint, the kid has kids of his own that age. The road is still unpaved and the mountains never change.
