#1010, was painted in the mornings. On Day 1, 3-29-16, from sunup at 6:30am to 8:50am I had the inking finished and washed the charcoal off, at 1pm I cleaned up from the morning painting. The second day I started at 8:30am and by 11:35am I had 100% coverage, that doesn't mean I was finished. Tom'sTreesDay2 800x1175.png Wednesday, Day 3, I started at 6am, no sun, a small amount of rain, finished at 12pm noon. The sun was gone and I can make up colors at home from the current palette. I finished at home, 4-5-16.

Than the afternoon painting of the Whale #1011 and the Night Ferns #1012 which is started at 7pm.

"Whale Painting" #1011, First is the sculpture itself. The whale and the ground it was on painted is shown on the 2nd day, but I only got John drawn in. There was a problem with the panel, the paint kept "orange peeling" with the color in blobs. It took 3-4 strokes to make it stick, I covered it with more gesso but that didn't work so well. I don't know what the problem was, perhaps it was insect oil spray that I had gessoed over weeks before. I was finished at 3:10pm.

"Night Ferns" #1012, This painting was done at night with the light that was on the ferns. It's tough painting at night. I darkened the sky during the day with Burnt Umber and Ultramarine Blue, colored in the stems, darkened the leaves, painted on location from 6pm to 8:30pm, it was finished on the 2nd night. Tom said, "It would have been easier to use black gesso." I had left it home.
